The Timber Cove Fire Protection District is a California special district along the beautiful northern Sonoma Coast and extending east into the heavily forested coastal ridges and hills.

While supported by a small paid staff, the Timber Cove Fire Department remains overwhelmingly volunteer-based. We provide all-hazards emergency response for a wide range of incidents, including wildland and structure fire, medical aid, vehicle accidents, and rope rescue.

  • District Size: 48 square miles, encompassing a 17-mile stretch of Highway 1

  • Population Served: Approximately 400 residents and up to one million visitors annually

Don’t wait for an emergency. Get all the links, alerts, and guides you need to prepare your home and family now.

  • Coastal Zone Fuels Reduction Survey: https://arcg.is/0nOfeW0

Help us prepare your property for safer, faster wildfire mitigation

Wildfire fuels reduction work has always been difficult to permit in the Coastal Zone. The new Statewide Environmental Protection Plan (EPP) finally gives our community a workable path forward!

By completing the survey, TCFPD can include your property in the upcoming district-wide EPP permit application so that:

    - Your fuels reduction work is legally covered under the EPP

    - Your project is documented and “shovel-ready” for future grant opportunities

Whether you plan to do the work yourself or hope to be included in district-supported grants, documenting your project now is the key step.

Survey responses will also help build a secure database of water sources and fire resources to support emergency response. Residents who want to be included in the database—even without requesting fuels reduction work—are encouraged to participate.

This pilot program is made possible by a generous donation and is currently limited to TCFPD residents.

  • Before conducting any residential or hazard reduction burning, you must obtain the necessary permits and check the daily burn status.

    • Air Quality Permit: You must contact the local Air Pollution Control District in advance to obtain their required permit and on burn day, phone-in to notify.

      • Northern Sonoma County APCD: Visit their Open Burn Permits page to apply for your permit online. It is advised to submit your application and payment at least 2 weeks before your anticipated burn date.

      • Call (707) 433-5911 on burn day before you light.

    • CAL FIRE Permit: As of Nov 7, 2025, CAL FIRE does not require a permit through May 1, 2026 unless there is an unexpected increase in wildfire potential. Visit CAL FIRE’s Step-by-Step Guide to Hazard Reduction Burning online here.

  • Learn what to do when trees block the road, power goes out, or flooding hits. Stay safe and help responders keep the community protected and roads clear. Read our Winter Storm Hazards guide.

  • The MASTER PLAN is available here. Thanks to financial assistance from the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors, the plan will help address the community’s dynamic risks and challenges.
